  • Beginning Pilates-Based Mat Exercise-Online Course

    Condition and tone your body with Pilates! Controlled mat exercises create strength, stability and suppleness in the spine while improving abdominal and back strength, posture and balance. Pilates provides stress reduction while enhancing injury prevention. Bring a blanket and mat. This class will run through Google Meet video conferencing.Please test Google Meet on your device before the day of the class.To login to the class, copy and paste the meeting ID into your browser. If you have trouble getting into the class the day of, please email commed@spps.org and staff will do their best to assist you in a timely manner.
  • Fundamentals of Adult Ballet

    An entry level class for adult students ages 18+ with little or no previous experience. Learn basic feet and arm positions, class etiquette, direction of movements and terminology based on the Russian style of ballet. Please see dress code online at www.spballet.org.
  • Intermediate Gentle Hatha Yoga-Online Course

    Explore the introductory poses in greater depth and focus on breathing practices. It is recommended that students taking this course have six months prior experience with Iyengar Yoga. Students will need to bring their own props - a yoga mat, belt, three blankets and a chair. This class is being offered using the Zoom online platform.   • Intro to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra-s

    Yoga is something deeper than doing postures, but what is it exactly? The sage Patanjali (circa 300 C.E./A.D.) illuminates the larger context of yoga practice in his seminal philosophical text. The guidelines laid out in the Sutra-s are just as helpful now as they were a few thousand years ago. Fundamentally, they offer practical and specific guidance about how to develop clarity, reduce suffering, and stay connected to our essential selves. This workshop provides an overview of some key concepts, group discussion, and a practice with breathing and movement principles described in the Sutra-s. Each class consists of three segments: standing Chi Kung, seated Chi Kung, and the practice of T'ai Chi forms.   • T'ai Chi Ch'uan Advanced Class

    T'ai Chi Ch'uan offers significant health benefits including low-impact exercise, relaxation, stress management, flexibility, serenity and balance. The advanced class consists of refining the practice of T'ai Chi forms and learning and improving teaching methods. Prerequisite: Students must demonstrate mastery of the Cheng Man Ching Short Form before registering and instructor's permission All Community Education participants are required to follow SPPS COVID guidelines (https://www.spps.org/safelearningplan), and all other communicated health and safety expectations.     Yoga therapy is a healing modality unlike any other. Using the tools of yoga (movement, breathing, meditation, and more) a yoga therapist can create a custom practice specifically for you—for your constitution, state of health, interests and goals. The National Institutes of Health identify that therapeutic yoga can help with a wide variety of health issues. What is the difference between yoga and yoga therapy? How is yoga therapy used today? And could this be appropriate for you? In this workshop, we’ll explore these questions and experience a sample class of a yoga therapy group for anxiety. Practice will be standing and lying on the floor, with optional chair yoga modifications. This class is being offered using the Zoom online platform.
