Minnesota History Is/As American History

Discussion Topic: Tearing Up the Social Contract: The Hormel Strike of 1985-86
The 1980s saw an end to Minnesota’s image as a bastion of economic security and political liberalism in the post-WWII era, as picket lines in Austin, Minnesota became a symbol of a new harsh reality in the United States. What led to this change and what has its continuing impact been?

An effective way to explore broad national developments and patterns is to dig deeply into a specific, local experience. Join Peter Rachleff, co-founder of St. Paul’s East Side Freedom Library, for a deep dive into local history that is intended to provoke ideas, questions, and conversations about the very meaning of American history.
