Camping 101 - Online Course

Winter 2021 - Adult

Want to camp but don't know where to begin? Get back to the basics in this super approachable class geared for first time campers. Night one of class will cover basic concepts and night two will focus on some essential skills. Topics covered throughout the course include: where to camp and what kind of camping is available in Minnesota; the pros and cons of camping during each season; identify existing organizations that do group camping trips for beginners; essential gear supply lists and how to budget for your trip, including where to rent or find used equipment; how to plan, prepare and pack for different weather conditions; where and how to set up a tent; how to start a campfire and safety considerations; basic map and orientation skills; and how to plan and prepare for emergencies and the unexpected. Please note focus will be on car camping.

Sections 6040WEA and 6040WEB are an online/in-person combo.  The first night of class is online using the Zoom platform. The second night of class is in-person at Hidden Falls Regional Park.  Because it might not be possible to fully socially distance and hear the instructor, face masks that cover your nose and mouth must be worn by all participants.  There are two date options for night 2 with a limit of 8 participants each night.

Section 6040WEC is online only.  The first night of class is online using the Zoom platform.  The second night of class is be a recorded version of night 2 will be emailed to you.

Instructor

Heidi Hanson


Heidi has vast knowledge in the camping world. She was raised in northeast Wisconsin enjoying Wisconsin state parks while camping with her family in the summers and spending winters cross country skiing, sledding and skating. Heidi has lived in the Twin Cities for past 12 years and continues her family’s outdoor traditions by exploring the state’s many natural areas. Heidi has built upon her outdoor experiences by backpacking in the arctic circle of Sweden and Norway for a 30 day adventure with the National Outdoor Leadership School, through certification as a master naturalist volunteer, and is now pursuing a masters of education in natural science and environmental education. Heidi currently works for the Three Rivers Park District Outdoor Recreation School where she spent the past five summers as an Outdoor Recreation Program Educator.
